Most drain clogs build up slowly over time. A few simple habits can help keep things moving and reduce the chance that you need to call a plumber for a backup.
Watch what goes down the drain
- In the kitchen, keep grease, oils, and coffee grounds out of the drain.
- In the bathroom, use a hair catcher in showers and tubs.
- Avoid putting fibrous food scraps down the disposal.
Rinse with hot water
Running hot water for a minute after each use helps flush away residue before it has a chance to settle and build up inside the line.
Do not ignore slow drains
A slow drain is usually an early warning. Addressing it early is almost always easier than waiting until it stops flowing completely.
